Event Report - from Bill

The event was played having 2 boys singles, 2 mixed, 2 girls singles, 2 boys doubles, and 2 girls doubles, best of 3 to 15 no setting.

Our Competition began on the Saturday with us being place in a pool with Yorkshire and Lancashire. We lost 9 – 1 to Yorkshire and 6 – 4 to Lancashire but those results do not reflect the whole story.

Against Yorkshire Matthew and Hannah lost 13 – 15 in the second game, Scott and Kathryn Lost 13 – 15 also in the second game. Mairi lost her second game in the singles 12 - 15. The girls doubles produced 3 setters in both sets with Mairi and Julie losing 15 - 12; 12 - 15; 13-15, and Kathryn and Samantha lost 15 – 5; 13 – 15; 14 – 15. In total the points difference between the 2 teams was less than 2 points per set, Yorkshire being ahead by just 42 points.

It was a very similar story in the Lancashire match and although we lost 4 games to 6 the total points difference was just 14.

Sadly that meant we were now in the 9th to 12th place group and had to play Northumberland, Durham and Borders. We beat Northumberland 8 – 2 and Durham 6 – 4. A close game but not as close as what was to follow against Borders. The last match, Kathryn and Samantha went on to court with us 4 – 5 down. The calculators were out trying to see how much we had to win by to make it a draw in games and then a set count up and if that was equal then a points count. The girls lost the first set 10 -15, depression set in, then they won the next 2 set 15 – 8 15 – 6 BRILLIANT! The scores were tied 5 games each and 13 sets each.

Time to start adding. The excitement was intense and in the end we totalled 336 points and Borders had 333. A win for us and 9th place overall. Seriously hard luck on Borders.

I will not single out any player because they all gave of their best but I would want to thank Marisa sharing the load of getting the players down to Gateshead and also Jamie for also taking players to Gateshead but on top of that playing every point with his players and as team coach giving sound advice and great encouragement throughout the two days.
