Hamilton Council Sports Performer of the Year Awards - Hamilton HQ 20/03/08
A BIG congratulations to our very own former committee member Pam Casey who was awarded the SALSC Services to Sport 2007 Award. This award recognises the hard work and effort that is put in behind the scenes when it comes to ensuring and maintaining the quality and availability of sports provisions for the young people of the area.
Fiona Archibald (Larkhall Academy) was a nominee in the Junior Female Section and due to her participation in the ICG tournament was also nominated for the Junior Team of the Year award.
Keith Turnbull (now assisting the LASBA Coaches) was also nominated this year for the Senior Male Award and picked up the 2nd Place Award. |
Secondary Championships - Perth - 15-16/03/08
We had a good representation in this years championships having players in almost every draw making it to the Semi-Finals
Out of all our players in the Championships our very own Fraser Michie (Dalziel High) managed to make it all the way to the finals of the Boys Under 19 Singles (beating Alan Steel (Dalziel High) on the way in the quarter-finals) Unfortunately losing out to the Number 1 seed Kenny Young (Bellahouston Academy - Glasgow's School of Sport) in a 3 set match (Winning the first 21-17, losing the second 12-21 and fighting back to narrowly lose the third 19-21) Craig Morrison (Dalziel High) had to pull out of the semi-finals of the Under 16 Boys Singles against eventual winner Michael Campbell (Firhill High)
Fiona Archibald (Larkhall Academy) and Emma Gallacher (Coltness) both made it all the way to the semi-finals of the Under 16 Girls Singles. Fiona was put out by the Number 1 seed and eventual winner Kirsty Gilmour (Bellahouston Academy - Glasgow's School of Sport) while Emma was put out by the Number 2 seed and eventual runner-up Kirsty McGlynn (Bellahouston Academy - Glasgow's School of Sport). also in the same event Delaine Clarke (Kilsyth Academy) (who was put out earlier by Kirsty Gilmour) went on to win the Under 16 Girls Consolation Final against Seona Stalker (Edinburgh Region) Craig Morrison and Kirsty Hannigan (Dalziel High) made it to the semi-finals of the Under 16 Mixed Doubles again to be put out by theNumber 1 seeds and eventual winners Gary Gibson and Gail Woodburn (Auchinleck)
Kate Abercrombie and Delaine Clarke (Kilsyth Academy) made it to the semi-finals of the Under 16 Girls Doubles after being put out by the Number 2 seeds and runners-up Shereen Spittal and Gail Woodburn (Ayrshire Region)
Eilidh Hannigan (Dalziel High) won the Under 19 Girls Consolation against Ingham McGhie (West Lothian Region) while Laura Gormill (Carluke High) was put out by Ingham in the semi-finals of the Consolation Draw
Fraser Michie and Craig Morrison (Dalziel High) made it to the semi-finals of the Under 19 Boys Doubles but due to Craig pulling out they had to concede the match.
Fraser Michie and Eilidh Hannigan (Dalziel High) were put out in the semi-finals of the Under 19 Mixed Doubles by eventual winners and Number 1 seeds Kenny Young and Kirsty Gilmour (Bellahouston Academy - Glasgow's School of Sport)

Primary Championships - Results - 17/02/08 This year saw the introduction of a Pool based qualifying section followed by an Elimination Knock-Out styled draw. The qualifying sections took place on the Saturday 16/02/08 with the winners and runners-up of each pool being invited to return on the Sunday where the Semi- Finals and Finals took place.
Our Special Guests on the day included the Official Umpires - who once again gave their time and expertise to ensure a fair "fight" took place. With us this year from South Lanarkshire Leisure to support the efforts of all the players and organisers was Mr Millar Stoddart (Millar is also the chairperson for the South Lanarkshire Badminton Development Group) A link to the Final Results and full results for all the Draws for 2007/08 is HERE |
SSBU Secondary Championship Qualifiers Selected - 03/02/08 The "chosen few" have been selected and announced to play for the Lanarkshire Area in this years National Championships.

Secondary Championships - Results - 28/01/08 This years Secondary Championships were as entertaining as ever.....with few of the games providing some surprising results.
Finals Night this year also saw several important guests arriving from Council Members representing both North and South Lanarkshire to BADMINTONscotland Representatives in attendance to support all the youngsters involved. The matches were Umpired by no less than 5 Official Umpires - Vince Webb, Jaz Beddi, David Craig, Elaine Bankier and Dot Tedman - and not to forget our wonderful referee Bob Moran.
Over the course of the 3 days a new tournament software program was in operation and despite a couple of technical "quirks" the entire tournament ran as smoothly as ever!
Another addition to the Finals Night this year was the use of some high tech gadgetry - A presentation combined with a live video feed all projected onto a large screen enabling the visiting crowds to keep up-to-date with the current matches on court and the upcoming ones too. All this was then topped off with a Trophy Presentation show with winners and runners-up displayed on-screen for all to see. All of this made possible due to the hard work, time and effort of one Mr Calder of Larkhall Academy without whom none of this would have been possible.

***** LASBA QUIZ NIGHT ***** Fun for the whole family !! As some of you may know the Lanark Group, the group responsible for the senior end of badminton in Lanarkshire, held a fund raising Race Night recently.
Following on from the success of it LASBA have arranged for a fund raising quiz night that will be suitable for the WHOLE family. It will take place on
Saturday 17th November 2007 at 7.30pm in "The Railway Club" at 18 Clydesdale St, Hamilton ML3 0DA.
There is limited parking to the rear of the building (approx 16 spaces) There is also on street parking or it is near Sainsbury's car park.
The function suite holds 160 people so there is plenty of room for you to bring along the whole family. Tickets will be on sale at £3 for adults and £2 for children and can be purchased either by contacting Pamela on the committee Email HERE, requesting them from Michael through the website Email HERE
Payments will be able to be made in Cash, Cheques, Postal Orders (and PayPal - please email Michael for details). and we should have the tickets ready in time for the Lanarkshire Restricted to allow us to sell them there also.
EVENTS taking place at the Quiz night will include a raffle, throw money at the bottle and shuttle target games for the children.
We will also be providing tea/coffee with a selection of cakes.
If anyone wishes to add any suggestions please feel free to do so.
PLEASE bear in mind that the Lanark Group and LASBA although share most of the same goals, they are not the same organisation. LASBA is the Association responsible for the development of the sport for the children of school age in Lanarkshire and as such the funds raised will go directly towards maintaining the children's side of the sport. Things such as the Primary, Junior and Secondary Quaichs, the Primary and Secondary Championships, the trophies, medals certificates, the hire of halls for all of these events, the buying of shuttles for these events and participation in the LASBA County team events plus all of the administration involved (printing of entry forms, school and personal affiliation letters, mailings regarding school badminton events throughout the year and results booklets etc) and also the website running costs.
As you can see there are a fair amount of things that the money raised will be used for, and although some of this is generated from entry fees for individual competitions and affiliation fees from schools and individuals, this does not completely cover the costs of keeping the children's sport alive and well in our area. At present we are actively seeking sponsors and local council funding to help with this too.
We cannot stress enough that the members of the committee, parents, teachers and individuals that give up their time to help setup and run all the tournaments, championships and take care of the admin do so on a voluntary basis and do not get paid for this - so every penny goes towards the children's benefit and participation in the sport. We thank you for your continued support of LASBA. |
